My oldest brother, the Rt. Rev. Great Archmandrite George Chalhoub, fell asleep in the Lord on Holy Tuesday, April 30, 2013.
He was born in Douma–Lebanon in 1930 to Wadih and Bahije Chalhoub, the second in eight children. From his childhood he felt the call to the priesthood, he started the Youth Movement in Douma.
On January 4th, 1952 he left his parents home to enter the Balamand Monastery and school. In that same year, he was tonsured as a reader during Great Lent; and on August 6th he was ordained a Deacon by the hand of the late Metropolitan ELIA Karam of Mount Lebanon at the Church of Holy Transfiguration in Dhour Chweir while he was spending the Summer at St. Elias Patriarchal Monastery.
In 1953, he became the Deacon of the late Patriarch THEODOSIOS while he was still the Metropolitan of Tripoli who took him under his wings and treated him like a son.
In 1958, after the Election of Patriarch THEODOSIOS VI to the see of Antioch, he accompanied the new Patriarch to the Patriaracate in Damascus and became his Personal Secretary.
On March 12th, 1959, he was ordained to the priesthood and elevated to the rank of Archmandrite by the Patriarch at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Damascus and was given the title of Protosangelos of the Patriarchate.
While in Damascus, in addition to being the personal secretary of the Patriarch, he was in charge of the patriarchate publication Alneeme, and also had many other administrative tasks.
In 1966, he played a big role in the election of many new Metropolitans and Bishops (one of them was our beloved Metropolitan PHILIP).
In 1967, he was kidnapped in Syria and was in Prison for 36 days because of his loyalty to the Patriarch.
In September of 1969, he was assigned by the Patriarch as the Abbot of St. Elias Patriarchal Monastery In Dhour Chweir where he spend ten years renovating and beautifying the monastery.
During the Civil war in Lebanon in 1975 and after, he helped many displaced Lebanese families and let them live in the monastery.
In 1979, he became the Parish priest for the parishes of Chweir and Dhour Chweir and Mtein in the Archdiocese of Mount Lebanon and the Vicar of Metropolitan GEORGE Khoder in Elmaten District. He served the parishes there faithfully for 30 years, he renovated and added into the churches and beautified them.
In 2009, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer and couldn’t take care of himself any more, so he joined the Monastery of St. George Elharf for six month and then he was transferred to St. George Nursing home in Beirut where he spend the last 3 years of his life on this earth. God chose him during Holy Week to go to eternity.
What he has done and what he accomplished during his life on earth will never be forgotten. He was a very faithful son, brother, friend, and especially was a faithful servant to His Lord and Master and a Spiritual Father to many.
May his Memory be Eternal,
Submitted by his brother the Very Rev. Fr. Elia Shalhoub, Pastor of St. Philip Church, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, USA
